Scarborough rugby club’s head coach Dave Beck stood down at the end of last week due to family reasons. Dave arrived at Newby in 2004 and has been at the helm during a period of great change at the club. He has shown great commitment and loyalty to a club where his father Dick Beck played in the 1950’s and  brought organization and planning to the playing side. However with his daughter being diagnosed with Leukaemia he has decided to end his time in charge and devote his time to looking after her. I’m sure the thoughts of everyone at Silver Royd are with him and his family at this time.

My friend Mick McGuinn ran into Darren Fearn today and he confirmed that he had moved from Newcastle Falcons to  Bedford Blues. I’ve known Darren all of his life really as I wet his after he was born and have followed his career since. Although the move is from the Premiership to the Championship I think it will be great for him as I’m sure he’ll get more first XV rugby next season.  Darren, 23, was born and raised in Yorkshire and started his playing career as a mini with Scarborough before moving to Newcastle to study at Northumbria University. After playing for Blaydon in the 2008/9 season and picking up an England Students cap, he was awarded a full time deal with the Falcons which coincided with his studies. At six foot three inches tall and tipping the scales at the 20 stone mark, Darren is certain to make an impact in the Blues’ front row next season. Best of luck Daz!

Introducing myself

17 May

I’ve just created this blog. My name is Dave Campbell and I have been writing on Rugby Union  in the Scarborough Evening News for over 20 years. I’m also the Communications Director of Scarborough RUFC Ltd, a club I’ve been involved with since 1979. The Scarborough Evening News is going on-line from the end of May 2012 and will be re-branded the Scarborough News. It will produce a print edition weekly every Thursday and from the start of season 2012-2013 I hope to continue writing in the print edition. Scarborough RUFC moved into a £5M new complex in early 2009 and is now one of the most progressive junior clubs in England but more on that in the coming days!  Although I’ve been a rugby journalist for many years I’m also a big football and cricket fan and when I have something to say on those sports I won’t be backwards in coming forward!!   I’ll have plenty to blog about in the coming months with the British home countries on tour in the southern hemispher, Euro 2012 and some exciting test matches in the offing. I’ll keep you up to date on what’s happening at Scarborough rugby club: comings, goings and news of any new signings particularly from abroad. However, I’ll have to get the hang of doing this blog first…..I’ll talk to you soon.
