Simon Smith steps down as Scarborough RUFC head coach

Scarborough head Coach Simon Smith has announced that he is stepping down from the role after three years in charge at Silver Royd. He has had a hugely successful time at the club taking them up to North One East from Yorkshire One in season 2017/2018 and winning the Yorkshire Shield in the same year with his team playing a brand of running rugby which delighted the club’s supporters.

The following season a mid-table finish was his side’s main ambition but once again their entertaining rugby took the division by storm culminating in a runners-up finish and a play-off game at Blackburn. They fell just short in that game but it was a terrific effort by all to have done so well at level six.

Having lost several experienced and vital players in the close-season, Smith’s men made a good start to their second season in North One and topped the table in November last year; however a horrendous run of long term injuries saw them in mid-table when Covid-19 halted the season last month.

I can remember when Simon joined the club from Bridlington and he has been at Scarborough a long, long time; however his family circumstances has changed of late and he now wants to commit more time to his partner and her twins plus his grandchildren. He has give so much to the club and I’m sure everyone at Silver Royd wishes him well.  He isn’t going missing and will still be around and still wants to help at the club.  ALL THE BEST SMITHY!
