Trailing 12-24 following a first half they will want to forget, Scarborough RUFC fought back in the second forty minutes to level the scores late in the game; however a lapse of concentration by the visitors saw Malton grab a late try and a bonus-point win at The Gannock yesterday.

Malton were quickly out of the blocks and took an early lead when flanker Matt Bowman crossed for their first try; scrum half Paul Angus converted for a 7-0 lead. The Seasiders struck back quickly when flanker Aaron Wilson crashed over to reduce the arrears to 7-5 before Angus slotted a penalty to stretch the Malton lead to 10-5 in the 20th minute.

Flyhalf James Bowman and prop Rob Featherstone crossed late in the half both converted by Angus for 24-5 before fly-half Tom Ratcliffe converted his own touchdown in first half injury time to cut the home lead to 24-12.

I think Coach Simon Smith had some animated advice and words of encouragement at the break as a sharper, focused Scarborough took the game to Malton. Fourth quarter tries from Ratcliffe and wingman Jonty Holloway, both converted by Ratcliffe tied the scores at 24-24 going into the last ten minutes and it was game on!

The initiative should have been with the Seasiders following their stirring fight-back; however they let their concentration lapse and Malton centre Jacob Stephenson danced round some despairing tackles to score the winning try late in the game.

BENNY BLACKALL (LEFT) AND VIA TUILAGI

Via Tuilagi making his first start for the club suffered a dislocated shoulder adding to the club’s injury woes with skipper Drew Govier, his brother Euan, Ben Martin, Benny Blackall, Nino Cutino and Billy Parker all sidelined with injury.
