Scarborough RUFC take on Moortown at Silver Royd tomorrow DAVE CAMPBELL PREVIEWS

4 Oct

Next up at Silver Royd in North One East tomorrow are Moortown RUFC. The Alwoodley-based club were promoted from Yorkshire One as champions at the end of last season and have made a solid start to their first season at level six. They opened their league account with a 26-17 win at Pocklington on the first day of the season and followed a week later with with the 52-24 home demolition of Malton and Norton; a week later they got a touch of their own medicine going down 54-7 at Bradford and Bingley. Last Saturday they drew 22-22 with Cleckheaton at home.

Today’s game is Scarborough’ second home game of the season; they opened their account with a narrow 29-32 defeat at Cleckheaton; however they did earn two bonus points. Skipper Drew Govier’s men have been undefeated since then, winning 26-20 at Kendal and 48-33 in their first home game against Percy Park. Last week a depleted Scarborough side missing flanker Drew Govier, prop Matty Jones, and influential lock Luke Brown came away with a 35-27 victory from Huddersfield YMCA to move into third place in the league; however talented young No8 Ben Martin was concussed in the first half of the game and will not play today.

All three of last week’s absentees return for this afternoon’s game, Drew Govier at No8 for Ben Martin, Matty Jones in the front row and Luke Brown who teams up with veteran lock Phil Watson in the second row. Joe Nellist, Will Leah and Billy Parker whose second half try last week earned the bonus point, are on the bench.

The last time today’s protaganists met at Silver Royd was on the 7th of  April last year when Scarborough won a ten-try Yorkshire One thriller 40-31.  Elsewhere, the Vikings are on the road at Beverley with the Danesmen enteraining Hull University at Silver Royd. All three games kick-off at 3pm.
