In a repeat of the start to last season the Seasiders’ opening two fixtures were away from home, this time at Cleckheaton on the opening day and at Kendal last Saturday. A second half comeback at Cleckheaton saw captain Drew Govier’s men bounce back from a 32-7 half-time deficit to score 22 unanswered points after the break but lose narrowly 29-32. However, they won a couple of bonus points for scoring five tries and losing by less than seven points. Last Saturday was a pretty similar story at Kendal; where the home side led 20-7 early in the second half only for Scarborough to take control and pip the Cumbrians at the post for a 26-20 bonus-point win.

Percy Park have also won one and lost one game, they went down 14-25 at Bradford and Bingley on the 7th September and last week beat Cleckheaton 27-19 at home. Scarborough had two close-fought games against the Tynesiders last season; Coach Simon Smith’s men coming away from Tyneside with a creditable 23-23 draw. At home in March the Seasiders raced to a 29-10 half-time lead but ‘Park’ staged a stirring second half revival to edge 32-29 ahead near the end; however, an injury-time try from hooker Sam Dawson snatched a 34-32 home win.

For Saturday’s game Scarborough have three enforced changes from last week; Tom Ratcliffe is unavailable and Phil Stewart takes his place at fly-half, Billy Parker is at a wedding and Angus Frend moves from fullback to centre with Henry Hocking coming in at fullback. The pack is unchanged and Connor Ward joins Nino Cutino and Jordan Holloway on the bench. Frend and Hocking will make their home debuts in this game and If last season’s games between today’s protagonists are anything to go by I think a real cracker is in prospect at what is expected to be a busy Silver Royd. Elsewhere on Saturday the Vikings and Danesmen are on the road at Hullensians as they taken on the Humbersiders second and third teams.
