Scarborough RUFC kicks off season 2019/20 on Saturday at Cleckheaton with the first of two consecutive games on the road.

Although six regular first teamers exited Silver Royd at the end of last season, Simon Smith’s squad still has a familiar look with twelve of last season’s regular squad all involved on Saturday; however there are newcomers in several key positions with Aussie Angus Frend (correct spelling) starting at fullback and new Rugby Development Officer (RDO) Stuart Smyth at hooker; both have big boots to fill!

Starting at tight-head prop is youngster Joe Nellist who joined the club from Driffield last season and promising winger Connor Ward starts on the right wing. Will Rennard, nephew of club legend Colin Rennard will partner the fast improving Luke Brown in the second row.

Elsewhere the midfield has a familiar and solid look with Tom Ratcliffe and Jordan Wakeham as half-backs and Aaron Wilson and Billy Parker in the centre; Jonty Holloway is on the left wing. In the pack, completing the front row is veteran South African prop Nino Cutino with brothers Euan and skipper Drew Govier in the back row with Chris Purdy. Matty Jones, Jordan Holloway and Joe Marshall are on the bench.

Last season the Seasiders beat Cleckheaton 26-19 on the road; I’m sure Simon will be looking for more of the same from his new-look squad on Saturday. A coach will leave Silver Royd on Saturday morning at 11am for a 3pm kick-off.
