A nostalgic look back at Scarborough RUFC 30 years ago.

2019-08-08 PROG 89 COVER

Yesterday my next door neighbour told me that I had given his daughter, who was rugby mad at the time, the programme for Scarborough’s Yorkshire Shield 1st round tie with Goole back in 1989. She returned the programme to me and the memories of that time came flooding back.

The line-up that day included the likes of Gary Hancock and John Brown as halfbacks, Colin Goodall, Charlie Hunter and Andy Naylor in the front row and the redoubtable Colin Rennard and Pete Cox in the second row. Behind them Stuart Prole, Neil Fletcher and Shaun Fearn were the loose forwards.

In the backs Mike Pepper was at fullback with ‘youngsters’ Carl Holdsworth, Nick Parkin, Rob Bell and Will James in the threes. Andy Downes and Richard Alport were on the bench.

The above was my ‘Newby News’ write-up in the middle pages of the programme; if you have a wee read you’ll see such well known players of yesteryear as Rob Hagan, Clive Burnard, Les Guntrip, Ian Parker, Tim Elliot, Dougie ‘mad dog’ Williamson and Barry Swiers.

I Also mentioned  a game at Kelleythorpe between Christmas and New Year when Scarborough were put to the sword by Driffield who won 60-0; we were very luck to get nil!

So there you are,  a bit of nostalgic before the pre-season starts with a friendly with Goole at Silver Royd. However I have combed through the old grey cells and for the life of me I can’t remember who won the Shield Tie that day thirty years ago!

I remember that match vaguely as I was only 16 at the time. I came across a load of old SRUFC programmes from the late 80’s/90’s in my dads attic not too long ago, brought back a few memories.
