Last Saturday’s 34-32 defeat of Percy Park at Silver Royd sets up a thrilling end to what has been a tremendous first season in North One East for Scarborough. The Seasiders have two games remaining to earn the points that would guarantee a second-place and a play-off with the second team in North One West for promotion to the North Premier Division; the first against neighbours Malton & Norton at the Gannock later today and the final game against Bradford & Bingley at home next week.

Malton have had mixed fortunes this season both at home and away but last week’s 78-29 defeat at Bradford & Bingley came completely out of the blue. They had beaten Bridlington 16-14 at Dukes Park the previous week but although they scored the opening try at Bradford they went on to concede 12 and considering the Bees had conceded 140 points in their previous three games, the result was met with incredulity elsewhere in North One East.

Last week Scarborough raced to a 29-3 lead in the first half of the game with Percy Park; game over? Not a bit of it; the men from North Shields turned in a superb second half display to lead 32-29 late in the game before an injury-time Scarborough try clinched a 34-32 bonus-point win.

So an absolute cracker is in prospect; I believe that Malton’s big defeat at Wagon Lane was a one-off and they will be the incredibly tough prospect that they always are. For Scarborough, the influential Tom Hicks who was unavailable last week returns at the Gannock to partner in-form Luke Brown in the second row; Will Leah joins Ian Williams and Alex Rowley on the bench.

Scarborough won the corresponding fixture 41-26 at Silver Royd earlier in the season following a hard-fought derby; I expect another tough, possibly high-scoring game tomorrow.
