TOM RATCLIFFE IN ACTION IN THE 29-20 DEFEAT OF YORK

League-leaders Scarborough overturned a twelve point half time deficit to run in four tries after the break for a bonus-point win at York.

The Minster-men had the use of a strong wind blowing down the paddock but were surprised when the Seasiders had the best of the opening exchanges in which their re-jigged front row more than held their own.

York secured a turnover in the 10th minute and ran the ball into Scarborough territory where they were awarded a penalty. York centre John Dawes’ long-distance penalty fell short and Scarborough continued to dominate possession.

York at last harnessed the conditions and drove into Scarborough territory and slick handling between forwards and backs sent fullback George Davies, up in support, over in the corner in the 21st  minute;  Dawes failed with his touchline conversion and York lead 5-0.

The Seasiders’ effort was disrupted when second row Tom Hicks was injured and limped off; Aaron Wilson moved from centre to second row and Bill Parker come on to replace Wilson.

Scarborough defended well into the elements but York No8 Shane Goulding broke the line in the 28th minute releasing left wing Rob Hodges who galloped over in the corner; Dawes added the extras.

Hodges was injured scoring and ex rugby-league convert Ben Dent was moved from the centre onto the wing. York failed to add to their total and led 12-0 at the break.

With the wind behind them Scarborough took the game to York from the restart; driving deep into home territory they conceded a penalty but Dawes found touch only on half-way with his kick into the wind; Ben Martin stole the ball at the front of the resulting lineout and it was moved crossfield via Sam Dawson and Jordi Wakeham (on for Alex Rowley). The Seasiders drove to the home line where fly-half Tom Ratcliffe released Wilson to power over in the 44th minute; Ratcliffe converted to cut the York lead to 12-7.

An exchange of penalties between Dawes and Ratcliffe in the 50th and 52nd minutes respectively saw the scores stand at 15-10 going into the final quarter of the game.

A second Wilson try in the 62nd minute tied the scores at 15-15 when Jordi Wakeham who made a big impact when he came on, took a quick tap at a penalty just inside the York 22 and released the big centre/lock who powered over; Ratcliffe failed to convert.

It was one-way traffic now and when the ball was moved infield following a scrum in the York 22, hooker Ian Williams released Ben Martin who glided over to nudge his side ahead for the first time in the game in the 71st minute; Ratcliffe converted for a 22-15 Scarborough lead.

The visitors’ pressure was unrelenting as they looked for the fourth try which would guarantee a bonus point and when it came it was straight out of the top drawer; breaking from just inside his own half Billy Parker drove into York territory before the ball was moved via Martin and Drew Govier to Jonty Holloway who scampered over at the corner in the 77th minute. Ratcliffe added the touch-line conversion for 29-15.

Second row Lewis Hannibal scored a consolation try for the minster-men in injury time immediately after Scarborough fullback Manning Smith had been sin-binned for an offence which was a mystery to all at Clifton Park.

Coach Simon Smith’s charges turned in another gutsy display holding their nerve as they fell behind in a first forty played into a gale. Their concentration and skills under pressure after the break saw them work themselves into a winning position after which they ensured a bonus-point with a flowing try which would have graced any rugby venue; once again a great TEAM performance.

SCARBOROUGH NEWS MAN OF THE MATCH: BEN MARTIN

It was very hard to single out an individual from such a TEAM performance; however Scarborough’s talented young No8 was everywhere in attack and defence including stealing the lineout for his side’s first try and touching down for the third.

SCARBOROUGH: SMITH HOLLOWAY PERRETT WILSON MARSHALL RATCLIFFE ROWLEY JONES (CAPT) WILLIAMS DAWSON HICKS BROWN E. GOVIER D. GOVIER MARTIN REPLACEMENTS TOM FISH JORDI WAKEHAM BILLY PARKER (all used).
