SCARBOROUGH AND WEST LEEDS PACK DOWN AT SILVER ROYD THIS AFTERNOON

SCARBOROUGH 35 WEST LEEDS 10

By Dave Campbell

Scarborough bounced back from last week’s defeat at Morpeth to go top in North One East with a 35-10 win over West Leeds at Silver Royd this afternoon.

A weakened Scarborough side with centre Matty Young injured and Jordi Wakeham and Tom Hicks unavailable took the game to the visitors in the early exchanges with No8 Ben Martin and centre Aaron Wilson making some thunderous breaks into the Leeds 22.

West Leeds took the lead in the 24th minute when winger Jack Marshall kicked a penalty for 3-0. Both sides had their share of defending to do in an end-to-end first half; Tom Ratcliffe was unsuccessful with a penalty attempt in the 36th minute but made amends three minutes later when he converted a try from Scarborough fullback Manning Smith for a 7-3 half time lead.

Playing with the wind after the break the Seasiders made a lively start and grabbed the lead in the 53rd minute when a tap-penalty by Wilson was taken on by Luke Brown. The big second row was stopped just short of the line and Ben Martin up in support, secured the ball and drove over; Ratcliffe added the extras for a 14-3 lead.

Skipper Matty Jones’s men maintained their pressure and winger Jonty Holloway outstripped the visiting defence to cross in the 58th minute; Ratcliffe converted for 21-3.

Ben Martin was yellow-carded on the hour when he was sent to the bin following an incident when Leeds scrum-half Dom Walsh hits Scarborough’s young scrum-half Alex Rowley with a nasty cheap shot.

To add insult to injury Walsh touched down for the visitors in Martin’s absence and winger Jack Marshall converted to reduce the arrears to eleven points at 21-10 in the 63rd minute.

However Scarborough took control as the visitors tired and a try from Tom Ratcliffe which he converted himself in the 75th minute and a second try from Ben Martin also converted by Ratcliffe saw them run out deserved 35-10 winners.
