Next up for Scarborough RUFC in North One East is the visit of West Leeds to Silver Royd on Saturday; having beaten Consett 36-34 on the road on the opening day of the season, they lost their next six games including a 45-27 defeat by Scarborough in mid October. Since then they have improved and have won two out of their three games this month beating Percy Park 31-22 and Bradford & Bingley 26-24 both at home on the 5th and 19th respectively. However they lost 24-11 at Malton two weeks ago.

Last Saturday Matty Jones’s men lost their first game since back in November going down 13-34 at Morpeth. The Northumbrians fully deserved their bonus-point victory which saw them leapfrog over the Seasiders into first place in the league on points-difference. Winger Manning Smith and centre Aaron Wilson ran in second half tries for Scarborough with Tom Ratcliffe kicking a first-half penalty.

Scarborough and West Leeds have a long-running rivalry and my mind goes back to the West Leeds sides of the 1990s with the marvellous Dave Breakwell gracing the old Newby paddock. All different faces now but the tradition of high-scoring thrillers continued with that 45-27 game earlier in the season and more tries are expected on Saturday.

For this game Ben Martin returns from injury at No8 but Tom Hicks and Jordan Wakeham are unavailable; centre Matty Young may be rested for this one. Alex Rowley continues at scrum-half with Ian Williams, Will Leah and Billy Parker on the bench.

Also in action on Saturday are the Silver Royd club’s second string, the Vikings; they travel to Hull to take on Marist RUFC. Both games kick-off at 2.15pm.
