DREW GOVIER AND BILLY PARKER IN ACTION AT PERCY PARK

Following last week’s dramatic drawn match at Percy Park, Scarborough return to Silver Royd on Saturday for yet another local derby in North One East; this time with near neighbours Malton and Norton RUFC.

The men from the Gannock have had a mixed start to the season having won six and lost six of their league fixtures so far. Last week they were on the wrong end of a 29-12 scoreline in their home game with Bradford and Bingley having beaten Bridlington 17-7 also at home the week previously. Their last away game was at Percy Park three weeks ago where they went down 39-17 at the hands of the men from North Shields.

2018-12-05 tom kicks for draw

TOM RATCLIFFE LINES UP HIS INJURY-TIME PENALTY AT PERCY PARK

Last Saturday skipper Matty Jones’s men took a depleted side to Percy Park and turned in a creditable display; with only minutes of the game remaining they trailed 13-23 but a stirring fight back saw Tom Ratcliffe kick an injury-time penalty to draw the game 23-23.

Sam Dawson, Tom Hicks and Ben Martin all missing last week; return for Saturday with Aaron Wilson moving back into the centre and Luke Brown, Alexis Core and Joe Marshall on the bench. Local derbies in our area are usually full-blooded, hard-fought affairs and I’m sure Coach Simon Smith will be looking for a positive result from a more familiar line-up.

THE VIKINGS travelled to Beverley last week and went down 7-15 at Beaver Park. The home side kicked five penalties in a close-fought game with the only try of the game coming from Vikiings’ skipper Andy Rossol. Veteran prop Tom Fish was named man of the match. This week the Scarborough second-string are on the road at Malton and name a strong line-up for the game. The Danesmen are also in action taking on Malton 3rds at Silver Royd.

Tom Ratcliffe lines up his injury time equaliser at Percy Park

In a game played in driving rain, a late Scarborough fight-back saw the Seasiders come from 23-13 down to snatch a share of the spoils with a Tom Ratcliffe penalty deep in injury-time at Percy Park this afternoon.

Having taken an early lead with a Ratcliffe penalty goal, the Seasiders slipped 3-5 behind when ‘Park’ crossed in the corner in the 12th minute.

A Euan Govier try converted by Ratcliffe nudged the visitors 10-5 ahead in the 17th minute but a second quarter penalty followed by a converted try saw the home side lead 15-10 at the break.

A second Ratcliffe penalty cut the Percy Park lead to 15-13 in the 49th minute.

A breakaway unconverted try in the 65th minute followed by a penalty in the 72nd minute saw ‘Park’ seem to clinch the matter at 23-13; however a try from Scarborough No8 Aaron Wilson in the 75th minute converted by Ratcliffe gave the visitors a lifeline at 23-20.

And when the the home side infringed in front of their own posts deep in injury time, Ratcliffe made no mistake with the kick to break Geordie hearts.
