SCARBOROUGH 50 YORK 43

By Dave Campbell

Perhaps I’ve had a sheltered rugby upbringing but I really have to say the game at Silver Royd this afternoon was the most exciting one I’ve ever watched!

On a perfect afternoon for rugby, league-leaders York raced to a 12-0 lead in only six minutes scoring a couple of tries and converting one with Scarborough laying a hand on the ball!

I feared the Seasiders may be swamped early in the game but showing great fighting spirit they came storming back with tries from scrumhalf Jordy Wakeham, Jack Anderson and a brilliant solo effort from French prop Alexis Coré; Tom Ratcliffe converted two for a 19-12 lead.

The Minstermen who played some terrific rugby throughout, came back with two tries, one converted to lead 24-19 at half time.

Scarborough battled back in the third quarters running in four unanswered tries to lead 43-24 mid way through the half; however with a superb display of running, possession rugby the visitors scored three tries in five minutes to draw level at 43-43 with time running out.

With the game looking set for what would have been an amazing draw, Scarborough skipper Matty Jones popped up in the York half to smash through a posse of would-be tacklers to grab a superb try and Silver Royd went wild; Ratcliffe converted for an even more amazing Scarborough win.
