Following a couple of games on the road, Scarborough plays their first home game at Silver Royd tomorrow against Cleckheaton.

Coach Simon Smith’s charges kicked off the season with a 53-33 win at Bradford & Bingley on the 1st of September scoring seven tries and picking up a bonus point. Unfortunately they lost the services of Tom Harrison injured early in the game and it looks as if he will be out of action for an extended period.

Last Saturday’s derby game with Bridlington was a pretty dour affair played in a steady downpour but ended in a breathtaking manner. The home side were leading 15-11 and were camped on the Scarborough line. They lost control going for a pushover try and the ball was cleared then hacked up-field for Jimmy Perrett to outpace the Brid defence and score. Tom Ratcliffe converted for 18-15 and against the run of play we were ahead! However referee Mr Walker was on ‘Fergie Time’ and played about six minutes extra and Brid scored with the final play of the game to, not undeservedly win 22-18.

SCARBOROUGH DRIVE TO THE LINE FOR BEN MARTIN’S TRY AT BRIDLINGTON

It’s very early days yet in their North One East campaign but Cleckheaton were shocked by their 56-5 defeat at the Gannock by Malton & Norton on the opening day; however last week they bounced back with the 25-17 home defeat of Bradford & Bingley at their Moorend ground. They raced to a 20-3 halftime lead but eased off after the break to cross the whitewash only once as the Bees staged an unsuccessful but spirited comeback.

Matty Young who was unavailable last week is the only personnel change for tomorrow’s game and plays at fullback; Jonty Holloway moves to the wing and Jack Anderson drops to the bench. Last Saturday the Seasiders’ poor ball retention and work at the breakdown saw them struggle for possession and probably cost them the game No doubt they will have been working to improve on that on the training paddock this week.

Last Sunday Scarborough’s women’s team the Valkryies entertained West Park Leeds in their first game of the season at Silver Royd. The local ladies had the edge in an end to end first half and led 24-15 at the break thanks to tries from skipper Jess Bray (2), Danni Rowley and Hayley Scholes who converted two.

Hayley Scholes was concussed in the first half and could play no further part in the game. However a battle royal ensued in the second half with the lead changing hands several times. The Valkryies scored late in the game to grab a 36-34 victory thanks to tries from Jess Bray (her hat-trick) and Beth Rounding; Jenny Arnell’s injury time conversion ensuring the points.
