Bridlington and Scarborough scrum down at Dukes Park

RFU NORTHERN DIVISION – NORTH ONE EAST

BRIDLINGTON 22 SCARBOROUGH 18

By Dave Campbell

Scarborough hearts were broken when Bridlington scored a late try to snatch victory in a rather dour local derby played in a downpour at Dukes Park.

The visitors took an early lead when flyhalf Tom Ratcliffe stroked over a 30 metre penalty to nudge his side 3-0 ahead. Some terrific Scarborough defending kept the home side at bay but  coach Shaun Fearn’s charges nudged 5-3 ahead with a close-range try in the 15th minute.

Scarborough took the game to the visitors and camped deep the Brid half before no8 Ben Martin scored a terrific opportunist try in the corner for 8-5 following a series of scrums on the home line.

Bridlington struck back for another unconverted try five minutes before the break to tie the scores before Ratcliffe nudged his side 11-8 ahead with a penalty on the stroke of half time.

Scarborough lost possession in midfield just after the break and Bridlington took advantage to drive to the visitors’ line and went over for a converted try to lead 15-11 early in the half.

Stalemate ensued and Bridlington bossed most of the second half. With about five minutes on the clock the men from Queensgate were camped on the Scarborough line going for a pushover try when they lost possession and the ball was hoofed upfield. Ratcliffe hacked on and Jimmy Perrett outpaced the Bridlington defence to gain possession and aquaplane over the line to score. Ratcliffe added the extras to nudge his side 18-15 ahead in injury time.

Following an injury-free second half, the referee Mr Walker added seven minutes of injury time which allowed Bridlington to spend a final five minutes in Scarborough territory and snatch a late converted try for a not undeserved 22-18 win.
