Consett’s game at Gateshead tomorrow will decide Scarborough RUFC’s opponents in play-off.

‘This Saturday Consett 1st XV travel to Gateshead for their final league game of the 2017-18 season. After a long, drawn out season where the team have spent most of their time in 4th place in the shadow of Durham City, Barnard Castle & South Shields Westoe they have their chance to leapfrog from 3rd to 1st place and clinch promotion to North 1 East league as Champions of Durham & Northumberland 1 (D&N 1); a league they have been present in now since the conclusion of the 2011-2012 season when promoted from Durham & Northumberland 2 in 2nd place to a strong Blyth side. A tough season followed with the 1st XV finishing 9th in the league but comfortably away from the relegation spots. Following their promotion to D&N 1 the club has gone from strength to strength with more players than ever taking the field for one of the clubs 4 senior teams, this giving us a fantastic platform for player development and progression through the Colts into the 1st XV, and allowing us to finish in a respectable 4th place in seasons 2013-14, 2014-15 & 2016-17 and a club best 3rd position in 2015-16. With the recruitment of Ben Woods (Head Coach) & Andy Smith (Strength & Conditioning Coach) in the off season the club has progressed into the position they find themselves in today with the opportunity to get promoted for the first time ever out of Durham & Northumberland 1. The players have been working extremely hard over the last month with the fixture back log to get themselves back into shape after bruising encounters with the top teams. After successive wins against Horden & Peterlee, Barnard Castle, Durham City & Stockton they find themselves needing one more bonus point win (5pts) to secure the title. Winning without a bonus point (4pts) will see the team finish in 2nd place and face Scarborough in a play-off for promotion. Having disappointingly being beaten by Gateshead earlier in the season the players know this is their chance for reprisal and are looking forward to the prospect of finishing such a fantastic season on a high’.
