Dave Campbell previews Scarborough’s vital promotion clash with Moortown at Silver Royd tomorrow!

6 Apr

Moortown RUFC travel east for their first ever game at Silver Royd tomorrow; of course the two clubs met on many, many occasions at Newby before the Seasiders moved to their present location in 2009 but haven’t met since then as the Alwoodly-based club have played in Yorkshire Two.

In early December coach Simon Smith’s charges played Moortown at their Moss Valley ground and lost 12-34. On the day they had eight personnel and positional changes from the previous week’s defeat of Beverley; however ‘town’ were worthy winners and were much the better side on the day. On their last outing at Middlesbrough last Saturday they were on the wrong end of a 10-7 score-line.

Although this will be the final league game of season 2017-2018 at Silver Royd; promotion and relegation issues are far from settled in Yorkshire One and coming into this game Scarborough are still in contention for a play-off place for promotion to North One East.

In the last couple of weeks they have played fellow contenders Beverley and Heath away from home with a possible ten points at stake. A 31-20 bonus point win at Beverley was followed by a losing-bonus point defeat 17-20 at Heath last week. Six from ten possible points wasn’t ideal but as Beverley went empty handed and Heath won only four points, it wasn’t too bad a return for skipper Matty Jones’s men.

For tomorrow’s game Scarborough have made only one personnel change to the squad defeated at Heath; Euan Govier comes in for the injured Phil Watson. Following tomorrow’s game, the SilverRoyders’ last two game are on the road; next week they make the long trip to Settle to take on struggling North Ribblesdale. The final game of the season is at Keighley on the 21st.

And don’t forget the Yorkshire Shield semi-final against Beverley at Silver Royd has yet to be played; so look out on the club’s social media platforms and in the Scarborough News for news on the date of the fixture.

Other senior rugby at the weekend sees the Vikings on the road at Marist whilst the Danesmen-Gulls XV play a triangular tournament with Moortown and Barton at Silver Royd. On Sunday the women’s team the Valkryies play Acklam Ladies at Middlesbrough.
