SCARBOROUGH AND HULLIONIANS SCRUM DOWN AT SILVER ROYD THIS AFTERNOON

Women’s National Championship (WNC) North Two East

SCARBOROUGH VALKRYIES 54   HULLIONIANS LADIES  26

By DAVE CAMPBELL

The Valkryies opened the scoring with a try from fullback Mel Halstead who added the extras herself but found themselves trailing 7-19 when visitors Hullionians ran in three rapid first half tries.

The Humbersiders stretched their lead to 26-7 with an early second half try and looked to be on their way to avenging the 39-10 defeat at Silver Royd in the cup two weeks ago.

However a touchdown from Casey Hoath converted by Halstead sparked a revival that saw the Scarborough girls run-in seven second half tries without reply.

Touchdowns from Hayley Evans, Jess Bray (3) Mel Halstead (2) and another from Hoath; seven converted by Halstead saw the local girls to a comprehensive 54-26 win.

In cold but bright conditions both sides provided an admirable advertisement for woman’s rugby with the Valkryies showing great spirit and determination in such a remarkable comeback.

PLAYER OF THE MATCH: MEL HALSTEAD.
