SAM DAWSON PLAYS IN THE BACK ROW AT MOORTOWN

I haven’t been to Moortown RUFC’s Alwoodley ground for years as ‘town’ have played in Yorkshire Two for many seasons. However they were promoted as champions last season and have made a solid start in Yorkshire’s top flight.

Coached by former Huddersfield YMCA director of rugby Carl Thewlis-Johns, Moortown won Yorkshire two in an undefeated season and although they haven’t set the world on fire they have recruited heavily and are ready for lift off in Yorkshire One. Last week they blew away the challenge of Hullensians in a 54-0 home win. I’ve been unable to obtain a report on the game but the scoreline was very impressive.

For Saturday’s game Coach Simon Smith has made two enforced changes to the team which beat Beverley 36-12 at Silver Royd last week; Joe Lenton starts at scrum-half replacing Jordan Wakeham who is recovering from keyhole surgery on his knee and Sam Dawson starts in a re-shuffled back row with Aaron Wilson moving to No8 replacing Ben Martin who injured his back last week. Jack Anderson joins Mikey Whitton and Euan Govier on the bench.

Also this weekend the Vikings take on Hull-based Marist RFC at Silver Royd on Saturday and on Sunday the Valkryies entertain Hullionians’ Ladies in the league. The girls from Brantingham Park were knocked out of the RFU Junior Cup by the Scarborough ladies 39-10 two weeks ago at Silver Royd.
