A PAINTING FROM SCARBOROUGH’S 27-10 WIN AT SELBY LAST WEEK

After last week’s diversion in the Yorkshire Challenge Shield, next up for Scarborough RUFC is the visit of Beverley to Silver Royd tomorrow. The men from Beaver Park have had a good start to the season and are fourth in Yorkshire One a couple of places behind Scarborough in second. They have lost only once on their last six league outings and that was a 21-27 reverse at Old Brods three weeks ago. On their last league outing against Heath they were on the right end of a 33-30 score-line following a close game at Beaver Park. Last Saturday they repeated the dose against the same opposition, this time in the Shield with a convincing 30-10 home win.

Coach Simon Smith’s charges have won one more game than Beverley and have also suffered only one defeat in the last six games; a 26-17 reverse at the hands of Heath at Silver Royd also three weeks ago. Since that first home defeat of the season, a 29-17 win at Hullensians was followed by 27-10 Shield win at Selby last week. Those Shield wins will see Scarborough and Beverley in the semi-final here at Silver Royd in the new year.

Last week the Seasiders lost the services of Matty Oxtoby and Jordi Wakeham in the first fifteen minutes of the Shield game at Selby. Jordi is selected for today’s game and Matty’s replacement is Mikey Readman. Mikey Whitton, Euan Govier and Joe Lenton are on the bench. Paul Taylor and Jack Anderson who came off the bench to play last week, play for the Vikings tomorrow at Beverley.

Last season Scarborough’s games with Beverley produced two real crackers, a 32-10 Scarborough win at Silver Royd and a 35-27 Beverley win at Beaver Park. Matty Jones’s men came from 0-10 down to win at home whilst Beverley raced to a 25-6 lead on their patch with Scarborough coming back late in the game but losing to a superior Beverley side on the day. Both high scoring games were full of running rugby and hopefully we’ll more of the same tomorrow. The Vikings are also in action tomorrow as they travel to take on Beverely 2nds.

This Sunday will be another very busy one for the Micro, Mini and Junior sections. The Minis have a matrix tournament at Silver Royd with Driffield, Pocklington and Hornsea. The under-13s, under-14s, under-15s and under-17s are in action aginst Hull Ionians, Malton, Malton- and Acklam respectively also at Silver Royd. In girls rugby the under-13s and under-15s are in an East Yorkshire festival at Hull Ionians’ HQ at Brantingham Park. The under-18 girls are on the road at Selby.

This evening The Gulls, the Scarborough veterans side are in action under floodlights at Silver Royd as they take on the Norsemen; kick-off 7pm.
