MEL HALSTEAD SPRINTS AWAY FOR HER SECOND TRY IN TODAY’S GAME AT SILVER ROYD

Following a 81-0 thumping at Bishop Auckland last week, the Valkries bounced back to run in seven tries in beating Hartlepool rovers 36-7 at Silver Royd this afternoon.

Playing in almost tropical temperatures for October the Scarborough girls took an early lead when last season’s leading try scorer Mel Halsead went over for 5-0. This was quickly followed by a try for Jen Arnall converted for Halstead for a 12-0 Valkryies’ lead.

A lively contest ensued before Halstead broke from the ‘pool’ ten metre line and spirited through a despairing defence to power over and cut in under the posts on the half-hour. She converted her own effort for a 19-0 half-time lead.

The Valkryies made a great start to the second half with Nicole Sedgwick gliding in three minutes after the break and Halstead adding the extras to stretch the lead to 26-0.

Hartlepool set up a series of rolling mauls in the Scarborough 22 and when a Valkryies’ player knocked-on over her own line a visiting player pounced to score a try which was converted to cut the home lead to 26-7.

Although the visiting forwards outweighed the home eight by quite a distance, the Valkryies had the upper hand at the set scrums and with the benefit of a better technique were more cohesive.

The local ladies had the upper hand in the closing stages and tries for Emily Metcalfe from a Halstead pass and prop Laura Welburn sealed a convincing 36-7 for the Valkryies who are next in action at Silver Royd on the 12th of November.
