Scarborough conceded an early penalty at Doncaster-based outfit Wheatley Hills before taking early control; but were involved in a thrilling close-fought Yorkshire One struggle in South Yorkshire.

‘Hills’ who were relegated from North One at the end of last season fell behind in the second minute when a break by fullback Jim Perrett released back row Drew Govier who sent winger Jonti Holloway over in the 2nd minute for 5-0. Flyhalf Tom Harrison missed the conversion.

Scarborough struggled to get possession as the home pack dominated the close exchanges and Wheatley fullback Josh Taylor cut the arrear to a couple of points with a penalty in the 15th minute.

The Seasiders, who always looked slicker in the backs, extended their lead in the 20th minute when Holloway romped over and grounded between the uprights. Harrrison added the extras for a 12-3 Scarborough lead.

The visitors always looked the likelier of the teams to record the next score and a surging individual effort from Perrett converted by Harrison extended the lead to 19-3 in the 38th minute.

The south Yorkshiremen continued to dominate in the forward exchanges and scored a push-over try on the stroke of half time for Taylor to convert, however the visitors led 19-10 at the break.

An early second half penalty from Harrison extended the Scarborough lead to 22-10 before a close-range touchdown from the home side reduced the arrears at 22-15 mid-way through the second half.

Wheatley Hills laid siege to the visitors’ line in the final quarter but a lack of composure saw them eventually lose their chance to at least grab a draw. Quick thinking in defence saw the Seasiders lift the siege and having camped on the home line in the final minutes, skipper Matty Jones powered over from short range in the 79th minute. Harrison converted for a hard earned 29-15 win.
