26 year old runner @Leoni Bradnam a Scarborough RUFC member and runner with the Scarborough Athletic club is running the London Marathon on Sunday the 23rd of April in aid of the RFU’s Injured players foundation. She has been involved in fund-raising including raffles, just-giving page etc and when she talked to me she told me all about her efforts:

” I run for Scarborough AC and am normally very competitive in races – but this time it is just a case of getting round! Will not be aiming for a time for once!!”

“I’ve enjoyed watching rugby for most of my life but have regularly seen players’ livelihoods and family lives suffering due to gaining injuries while playing a game that they love. I’m inspired by the mental determination of rugby players, especially those who have been injured in such a way – they have an unbelievable amount of mental strength which – contrary to popular belief – is the majority of what any successful runner needs!”

” I want to raise £2000 to support players who often have had their lives changed by a catastrophic spinal cord or traumatic brain injury, many who have lost speech and the ability to feed themselves, communicate or – in some cases – even move. Many need specialised wheelchairs so they can get out of the house or play with their children; some require audio and speech equipment; others need to re-train in a new career so that they can continue to earn money for their family.”

I will be holding my final raffle at Scarborough Rugby Club on the 8th April and people can expect to pick up prizes such as genuine England kit and vouchers for local restaurants.
