BILLY PARKER AND LONI-LONI ON THE CHARGE AGAINST HEATH LAST WEEK photograph ANDY STANDING

Scarborough are on a roll with only one league defeat in their last eight league games; last week they had the edge on a Heath team whose results do not bear out their strength which is based around a hard, cohesive forward pack. However that limited strategy was exposed against a Scarborough side playing with confidence and structure and the Seasiders in the end, were comfortable 24-3 winners thanks to tries from lock Aaron Wilson, skipper Matty Jones and prop Nino Cutino. Tom Harrison had a superb afternoon with the boot converting all three having opened his account with a penalty early in the game. Billy Parker and Tom Harrison were outstanding but livewire back row Devin Ibanez was my man of the match.

The Seasiders are on the road at Hullensians tomorrow looking to extend their winning run. The Humbersiders have beaten Scarborough comfortably on their own turf in the last two seasons so skipper Matty Jones’s men will be looking for a reversal of fortunes at Hull’s Springhead Lane ground.

Hullensians started the season well going five games unbeaten; three wins, including the 48-19 hammering of Beverley at Hull and two draws, 25-25 at Selby and 28-28 at York. A 51-21 defeat at league-leaders Bridlington brought them back down to earth and that reverse was followed by defeats by high-flying West Leeds and Old Brodleians. Their form has taken a real dip over the last two weeks with a 20-10 home defeat by Heath and last week’s 52-19 thrashing at bottom club (up to that point) Acklam. Whether it was brilliance by the home team or a train-crash of a performance from the visitors has yet to be reported but it leaves the Seasiders no knowing what to expect on Saturday. A post on-line on the Yorkshire Rugby Forum from a Hullensians supporter reports that they have an injury crisis at the club however is it such as they would have taken such a thrashing from Yorkshire One’s least successful team?

For tomorrow’s game Coach Lee Douglas welcomes influential back row Isaac Faamau to his squad which also includes front row Jordan Day who moves up from the Vikings and VI Form College student Joe Holiday. Ethynne Terblanche has recovered from the injury which saw him leave the field in last week’s game with Heath. Graeme Jeffrey returns to ‘semi-retirement’ following a solid game last week and second row Mikey Readman is unavailable.

Elsewhere, the Vikings who include Chris Purdy, Tom Fish, Ian Williams and Paul Taylor in their squad entertain Hullensians 2nds at Silver Royd. Due to their injury problems Hullensians can’t raise a 3rd XV at home so the Danesmen have picked a squad and are still looking for a game tomorrow.

THE VALKRYIES TRAVEL TO WEST PARK LEEDS ON SUNDAY

Scarborough’s Micro, Mini, girls and junior rugby is thriving with Silver Royd host to a large number of kids every Sunday taking part thanks to the ACTIVE YOUTH PROGRAMME sponsored by Mc Cain foods. Apart from the kids staying healthy and some mums and dads getting a bit of a lie-in, the club’s senior rugby set-up benefits from the stream of talented players coming through; Eight young players who have come through the youth system have played first team rugby with distinction in the last month. Further details on junior/girls/micro/mini/schools rugby from the club’s YOUTH DEVELOPMENT OFFICER (YDO) Graham Hogg on 01723 357740 extension 5 or at graham.hogg@scarboroughrugby.co.uk.
