NINO CUTINO ON THE CHARGE AGAINST ILKLEY IN HIS FIRST SCARBOROUGH STINT

Acklam travel south to Silver Royd tomorrow looking for their first win on the road this season. The Middlesbrough-based club slid to big defeats at Old Brods (59-0) and 36-0 at Keighley last month. However they have fared better at home beating North Ribblesdale 21-17 and going down 12-23 after a hard-fought encounter with Heath last week. The Teesiders threw away a hatful of try scoring opportunities and failed to cash-in on their first half possession. Heath took tentative control after the break and led 23-5 near the end. Acklam fly-half Daniel Ashton rounded off the scoring with a brilliant solo effort he converted himself; so he’s one to watch this tomorrow.

Skipper Matty Jones made a good start to his second spell at the club scoring a try in the team’s first away win of the season at Yarnbury last week. Scarborough got off to a flying start racing to a 17-0 lead early in the game but appeared to run out of steam after the break and Matty’s late try just gave the visitors the edge in a 29-25 bonus-point win. As you probably know my domestic situation has restricted me to home games for the time being, but my ‘spies’ tell me that the Seasiders wilted after Issac Faamau limped off with a pulled hamstring after half an hour and struggled for fitness in the second half.

JORDAN WAKEHAM MISSES TOMORROW’S GAME FOLLOWING ILLNESS

If you follow social media you will know that young Jordan Wakeham spent several days in Scarborough hospital early this week and is still recovering. He’s on the mend and will, I’m sure, be back in action soon. Alex Rowley, a product of the club’s mini and youth setup makes his first team debut in Jordan’s place at scrum-half. Also missing tomorrow is Isaac Faamau nursing his hamstring and Graham Hogg who is still waiting for clearance to play from the medics. Nino Cutino makes his first appearance back at the club and Aaron Wilson who also started off in our minis makes his first team debut tomorrow. Scarborough and Acklam’s last meeting at Silver Royd on the 14th September 2013 saw the Seasiders win 52-0.

PHIL WATSON

Good news for the club is the return from long-term injury of ex-captain Phil Watson; he turns out for the Vikings at Driffield. The Danesmen are also in action against Driffield but at Silver Royd; they take on the woldsmen’s 4th XV. All three games kick off at 3pm.

THE VICTORIOUS VALKYRIES AT DARLINGTON LAST SEASON

On Sunday the Silver Royd club’s ladies team, the Valkryies entertain visitors Workington Ladies in the first round of the National Knockout competition. The local women were let down by Bradford Salem who couldn’t raise a team last Sunday so they’ll be hoping their game goes ahead. Valkryies-Workington kicks off at 2.45pm.

And finally, a terrific sportsman’s dinner at the J.M. Guthrie clubhouse last week was graced by the club’s guest of honour Sean Fitzgerald. The legendary former All Black captain gave a sell out gathering a unique insight into rugby at the very highest level with his inspirational speech and gave us all plenty of food for thought on all matters rugby.
