31 Oct

Scarborough’s ladies team, the Valkryies ran in ten tries in the 62-5 defeat of visitors Morpeth Ladies at Silver Royd yesterday.

Claire Wilkinson opened the scoring and went on to run in a hat-trick of tries. Further tries came from fullback Mel Halstead (2), Danielle Rowley, Jess Glanvill (2) and Aisling Robinson who also grabbed a couple. Halstead added six conversions for a personal tally of 22 points.

Scarborough fight back to grab bonus-point win over high-flying Beverley

29 Oct

Scarborough bounced back from an early 0-10 deficit to score 32 unanswered points for a convincing bonus point win at Silver Royd this afternoon. Tries from wing Matty Young (2), back row Devin Ibanez and an interception try from skipper Matty Jones plus twelve points from the boot of centre Graham Hogg saw the Seasiders to a convincing 32-10 win.

SCARBOROUGH LOOK TO MAKE IN FOUR LEAGUE WINS IN A ROW AT SILVER ROYD

28 Oct

DEVIN IBANEZ, GRAHAM HOGG (2) AND TOM HARRISON WERE IN THE TRIES LAST WEEK

Matty Jones’s men bounced back from their surprise Yorkshire Shield exit to score four tries in a 27-0 win at Bradford Salem last week. Flanker Devin Ibanez opened the Seasiders account with a try in the second quarter before a touchdown from inside-centre Graham Hogg converted by fly half Tom Harrison stretched the lead to 12-0 at the break. Hogg kicked the visitors 15-0 ahead with a penalty before adding his second try converted by Harrison for 22-0. And Harrison completed the scoring with a late try to earn a well deserved bonus point.

Beverley are next up at Silver Royd tomorrow kick-off at 3pm; the east Yorkshiremen have been in freefall for a couple of seasons now suffering consecutive relegations from National League Three and then North One. However they have steadied the ship this season and sit third in Yorkshire One which I’m sure is a mighty relief to everyone at their Beaver Park HQ. Last week they scored three first half tries to lead 19-6 at the break against struggling Heath.; however, the west Yorshiremen came back strongly scoring a couple of second half tries and although Beverley failed to add to their total they went on to win 19-13.

JUNIOR TUPEI  IN ACTION FOR SCARBOROUGH (L) AND BEVERLEY (R)

Scarborough and Beverley last met in a competitive match back in 2002 when the home side scraped a narrow 3-0 win at Newby; so tomorrow will be Beverley’s first league visit to Silver Royd. To add further spice to the proceedings our first Youth Development Officer Junior Tupai, now Director of Rugby at Beaver Park, who scored a try last week, will play for the visitors;  in fact if I remember correctly Junior and Matty Jones joined Scarborough at the same time early in the century. With four league places but only two points separating the teams this is a vital game for both teams. For Scarborough, Coach Lee Douglas has added Drew Govier, Bob Murphy and Billy Parker to his squad for the game. Beverley are unable to raise a second team for their game with the Vikings at Beaver Park and therefore the Vikings and the Danesmen will take on opposition from Driffield here at Silver Royd tomorrow.

ACTION FROM VALKRYIES V HARROGATE AT SILVER ROYD

Following their 18-14 win in a close-fought game with Harrogate a couple of weeks ago, the Valkryies are back in action on Sunday at home to visitors Morpeth Ladies. Kick-off is at 2pm.

23 Oct

DEVIN IBANEZ, GRAHAM HOGG AND TOM HARRISON; TRY SCORERS AT BRADFORD SALEM YESTERDAY

Scarborough bounced back from last week’s surprise Yorkshire Shield   exit to score four tries without reply at Shay Lane, Bradford yesterday.

American back row Devin Ibanez opened the visitors’ account with a try in the second quarter before a touchdown from inside-centre Graham Hogg converted by fly half Tom Harrison stretched the lead to 12-0 at the break.

Hogg kicked the Seasiders 15-0 ahead with a penalty after the break before adding his second try converted by Harrison for 22-0. And Harrison completed the scoring with a late try to earn his side a well deserved bonus point.

JAMES LEACH IN ACTION AGAINST NORTH RIBBLESDALE LAST SEASON  Andy Standing

Scarborough will look to bounce back from last week’s woeful performance in losing to Middlesbrough in the Yorkshire Shield when they play Bradford Salem at Shay Lane, Bradford tomorrow.

The Seasiders turned in easily their poorest home performance in several seasons as they slipped to a 12-25 defeat to the Teesiders at Silver Royd. To compound their misery, Coach Lee Douglas’ charges lost the services of promising lock forward James Leach who dislocated his knee and was taken to Scarborough Hospital and subsequently to York where he underwent surgery on Wednesday and Thursday. Due to the delay caused by the injury and the inability to move James the game was completed on an adjacent pitch.

James’s family informed me on Wednesday that he had been moved from Scarborough hospital to York for surgery on Wednesday on serious leg injuries. James has snapped all but one of the ligaments supporting his knee and more worryingly has serious nerve damage to his leg. He is in good spirits but obviously his family are worried about the outcome following the surgery. I’ll report his progress in this blog and on the SCARBOROUGH RUGBY UNION FOOTBAL CLUB facebook page when I have more news. Best of luck James

PHIL WATSON RETURNS FROM LONG-TERM INJURY

Better news on the injury front sees the return to action at Bradford of Jordan Wakeham, Isaac Faamau, Graham Hogg, Richard Scales and former skipper Phil Watson. This injection of experience will be welcome as Shay Lane is not the easiest of venues on the road. However the Seasiders came away from Bradford last season with a narrow 13-10 win thanks to a try from former-YDO Tom Chadwick and an injury-time drop-goal from skipper Tom Ratcliffe; Kiwi Anthony Coffee added five points with the boot. Scarborough completed the double with a 26-10 win at Silver Royd.

GRAHAM HOGG RETURNS FOLLOWING CONCUSSION

Bradford Salem are one place below 8th placed Scarborough in Yorkshire One having won two of their six league outings so far this season. However none of those have been at home with success coming at North Ribblesdale (14-7) on the 24th of September and last week at Heath where they won 28-21. The Seasiders will hope their contingent returning from injury will give them the edge to keep the west Yorkshiremen waiting for their first home win of the season.

TOM FISH IN ACTION FOR THE VIKINGS

Elsewhere the Vikings who had a resounding 27-0 win on the road, and the  Danesmen are in action against Hullionians at Silver Royd and Brantingham Park respectively. All senior games kick-off at 3pm tomorrow.

THE VALKRYIES IN ACTION AGAINST HARROGATE

The Valkryies won their first home game of the season against Harrogate last Sunday. Tries from Claire Wilkinson and Mel Halstead who added eight points with the boot saw the Silver Royd women to a narrow 18-14 win following a close-fought game. They’re next in action on Sunday the 30th against Morpeth; more on that one next week.
