MATTY YOUNG IN ACTION IN LAST WEEK’S 11-33 DEFEAT AT BRIDLINGTON

Things have not been easy for Scarborough’s rejigged side in the opening games of the season as they bed in new players and await the arrival of new skipper Matty Jones. A narrow defeat at Selby, a hard-fought home win over York and a 33-11 thumping at league-leaders Bridlington last week can best be described as a ‘mixed’ start.

And things won’t get easier as the Seasiders entertain West Leeds at Silver Royd tomorrow. ‘West’ come off the back of a magnificent promotion winning season as champions of Yorkshire Two, winners of the Yorkshire Shield and winners of the RFU National Senior Vase at Twickenham.

They have won two out of their three Yorkshire One fixtures so far, scoring 113 points in the defeat of Heath and North Ribblesdale and losing 17-11 at Old Brods. I’m old enough to have reported on many close games between the clubs at Bluehill lane and Newby in Yorkshire Two at the turn of the century when the legendary Dave Breakwell led West Leeds. In fact I remember when reporting at one game at Bluehill lane I chatted to a Scarborough players’ wife who, although heavily pregnant was watching her husband in action; her offspring has seen action with the first team this season. Can you guess who it is?

TOM RATCLIFFE SCORED SCARBOROUGH’S ONLY TRY AT BRID LAST WEEK

For tomorrow’s game Coach Lee Douglas includes wingman Jack Anderson in his squad and welcomes back second row Mikey Readman who has served a two match ban for his sending off at Selby. There was much talk about the performance of the young referee at Bridlington last week but 33-11 is a thumping in anyone’s book and the men from Silver Royd will have to put in a big shift against a rampant Leeds outfit that are scoring tries for fun at the moment.

PAUL TAYLOR (RIGHT) MADE A BIG DIFFERENCE WHEN HE CAME ON AGAINST BRID 2nds

Last Saturday I had a chance to catch up with the Vikings as they beat visitors Bridlington 2nds 27-3 at Silver Royd. Drawing 3-3 at half time they ran away with things scoring 24 unanswered points in the second half to win 27-3. Prop Paul Taylor made a huge difference when he came on at half-time; Joe Lenton was my man-of-the-match.

SCARBOROUGH COLTS IN ACTION LAST SUNDAY

A glorious Sunday morning gave me a chance to pop up and see some junior and mini-rugby and what a treat it was; so many enthusiastic kids, parents, young men and women enjoying their rugby. I particularly enjoyed the colts’ game between Scarborough and Selby. The visitors won a terrific game 25-17 with both sides playing some enterprising rugby.
