Scarborough slid to a narrow opening-day defeat at Selby last Saturday; the Seasiders had a huge amount of possession but couldn’t find a way through a well-marshalled home defence and lost 10-6 on an afternoon of torrential rain. Their entirely new midfield of Tom Harrison, Maloni Moata’ane and YDO Graham Hogg had never played before and it showed in a somewhat disjointed performance. Hogg kicked a couple of penalty goals but a horrible day at the office was compounded when Mikey Readman was sent off for a bit of fisticuffs right in front of the referee.

However, they’ll have to put that disappointment behind them when they take on York at Silver Royd tomorrow. Last week the men from Clifton Park who are fancied for promotion this season, opened their account with the 30-5 bonus-point home defeat of visitors Heath. Last season, having been trounced 31-12 by Scarborough at Clifton Park in November, the Minstermen got sweet revenge with a narrow 13-5 win at Silver Royd in March.

For Tomorrow’s game Coach Lee Douglas has named a squad which includes David Downes, Mark Hopper, Joe Marshall, Richard Scales, returning South African Ethynne Terblanche and former skipper Nick Ingham. Matthew Else who is back training is unfortunately unavailable and Ingham will probably be drafted into the second row for Readman with a bulkier looking Terblanche starting in the back row. Perhaps a couple of sessions on the training paddock this week will improve the side’s communication in what should be a cracking game. Also in action on Saturday are the Vikings who take on York at Silver Royd; both games kick-off at 3pm.

Stepping out onto the paddock tomorrow Graeme Jeffrey has once again come out of a retirement that never really seems to have begun? Scarborough’s popular Chief Operations Manager has been a permanent fixture at the club since the ‘olden days’ back at Newby and continues to run in tries every season. He has informed me that he will soon take a break as he is expecting an addition to his family in the not too distant future.

The game between the club’s women’s side the Valkryies and Acklam scheduled for Sunday is postponed due to the visitors being unable to field a side; the game will be played at the end of the season. Therefore, the Valkryies season will kick off on Sunday the 18th of this month when they travel to county Durham to take on Bishop Auckland.

Touch rugby at Silver Royd is going from strength to strength every Wednesday evening. This week the Assistant Leisure Manager at BARONS, Dave Mort had a ‘go’ at rugby for the first time with a mixed sex and ability group and rounded off an enjoyable evening scoring a try; He was suitably ‘chuffed’ with his effort. Dave is a big unit; we could see him in a Scarborough Shirt yet?
