The report in yesterday’s Scarborough News that Scarborough RUFC had named Matty Jones as the club’s captain came as no surprise to many supporters as he seemed the obvious choice when the experience of other possible candidates was considered. The big Kiwi front rower has a history with the club and is an inspirational figure on the paddock. However, the Silver Royd faithful will have to be patient as he is not due to arrive in the UK until the 27th of September and will miss the league games against Selby, York, Bridlington and West Leeds. He should make his first appearance against Yarnbury on the road on the first of October.

South African Ethaynne Terblanche has arrived and is working hard in the gym to regain full match fitness. On his last spell at Newby the compact loose forward was a man of few words and much of his work at blind-side was done with his nose only millimetres from the turf at the coalface. With Isaac Faamau and Phil Watson in contention for back row places life could get interesting in the back five.

As I was in London last weekend I missed the visit of Pocklington for the first of the pre-season training games. Being the middle of August Scarborough had only around 18 players to chose from as opposed to their opponents who had around 30; the final score of the three session game saw the visitors run out 34-24 winners. However I’m informed that a more representative Scarborough squad will be on duty to take on North One side Driffield at Silver Royd tomorrow. KICK OFF FOR THIS GAME IS AT 1.30PM

I’ve been asked to write a rugby column commencing on the 2nd of September for The Scarborough Review, a free monthly newspaper. I’ll be reporting on Scarborough rugby including match reports and previews of games in the month ahead plus gossip and what’s happening at Silver Royd.  Also if you have your views or anything you would like me to cover you can always reach me at or on 07710 412510; it should be fun.
