A festive atmosphere at Scarborough’s Silver Royd ground got a big crowd in the mood for a cracking afternoon of county championship rugby.

The sparkling Yorkshire coast sunshine was deceptive as over fifteen hundred spectators had to wrap up against a biting north-easterly wind which reduced the temperature and provided the ideal conditions for a thrilling ‘War of the Roses’ game.

Yorkshire raced to an early 10-0 lead with a penalty and a converted try before the visitors struck back to lead 18-17 halfway through the first 40 minute period. However a late first half penalty saw a busy Tykes’ side led 20-18 at the intervl.

Lancashire took control after the break and led 38-20 going into the final stages of the game before a late Yorkshire try gave the final score respectability at 38-27.

The final score was a big disappointment for the Yorkshire element of the big Silver Royd turnout; however it produced the correct result and a great afternoon’s entertainment was had by all.
