BLIZZARD AT OLD BRODS! Photograph ANDY STANDING

I’ve been covering SCARBOROUGH RUFC for 37 years now but Saturday was the first time I’ve spent a large proportion of the second half watching the game through a window in the clubhouse. I’m 72 in a few weeks time, have some coronary stents and am rapidly running out of toes. And following a first half dicing with the elements I decided in the blizzard conditions that discretion was the better part of valour and retired to the clubhouse at the break.

With a a couple of large scotches inside me I watched much of the second half through a window in the company of Scarborough rugby legend John Oxley popping outside every so often.

Scarborough’s almost scratch team were magnificent to a man and played so well for each other and showed terrific spirit on a memorable but arctic afternoon.
