Late Ratcliffe penalty seals Scarborough victory at Bradford Salem

27 Feb

An injury time drop-goal from skipper Tom Ratcliffe saw Scarborough snatch a 13-10 win at Bradford Salem this afternoon.

The Seasiders led 10-3 at the break thanks to a try from fly-half Tomasz Chadwick converted by centre Ant Coffey who later added a penalty.

The west Yorkshiremen struck immediately after the break with a try and conversion to level the scores at 10-10.

A much improved performance from last week’s defeat at Hullensians saw the visitors compete up-front in the second half exchanges before Ratcliffe slotted the late kick for victory.

Hullensians are fourth in Yorkshire One, just above Scarborough and have been dogged by inconsistency this season typified by recent results where an away defeat at bottom club West Park Leeds (19-18) was followed by the 17-13 home defeat of high-flying Bridlington. Last week they just edged past strugglers Yarnbury 15-14.

The clubs produced a nine-try spectacular when they met in the corresponding game at Silver Royd earlier in the season with Scarborough winning 38-29. Both teams earned a tries-scored bonus point with Scarborough running in five and Hull getting four.

For tomorrow’s game Wesley Langkilde who had a stormer against the Humbersiders earlier in the season, starts in the front row with John Ireland at lock and Richard Scales in the back row. The threequarters are as last week with Mark Hopper, Ben Martin and Toby Welsby on the bench.

ZOE ALDCROFT (CENTRE) FOLLOWING ENGLAND U20s WIN ON THURSDAY EVENING

Zoe Aldcroft continued her stellar England career on Thursday when she played for England under-20s at Aldershot. England won 41-12 and it was the first of three games this season for the under-20s with the squad also taking on France both home and away. The schedule is: England v France: Saturday 5 March, 2pm at Esher RFC followed by the return game two weeks later on the 19th of March at Chantilly RFC, France. I feel it won’t be long before the likeable former Scalby School student now studying at Northumbria University, plays for the full National side.

Bees next at Silver Royd unfortunately I’ll be missing!

2015-12-07 SILVER ROYD PICTURE SHARPScarborough return to Yorkshire One action tomorrow following their enforced day off last weekend and league-leaders Bradford & Bingley are their opponents at Silver Royd.

The Seasiders have faced the Bees twice already this season losing 39-22 at Wagon Lane in October and 22-8 in the Yorkshire Sheild at Silver Royd a month later.

Jordan Wakeham, Phil Stewart, Mikey Readman and Ant Coffey are in the home lineup which also includes Richard Scales who had a great game at Old Brods a couple of weeks ago.

Unfortunately I’ll be missing all the action as I had a nasty fall whilst visiting relatives a few days ago and have been left a bit battered and bruised. I’m slowly on the mend but will be absent on Saturday. and before you ask, no I hadn’t been drowning my sorrows after another abject Scotland effort at Murrrayfield!

This has been a bit of a truncated effort  due to the aftermath of my  ‘diving’ efforts but hopefully I’ll be back reporting FROM THE TOUCHLINE before too long.
