SCARBOROUGH VALKRYIES 44 MORPETH 22
Scarborough Valkryies turned in a thrilling eight try performance full of running rugby to beat visitors Morpeth 44-22 at Silver Royd yesterday.
The Silver Royd side got off to a flying start running-in three tries through Claire Wilkinson, Casey Jordan and skipper Cathy-Ann Myers in a blistering opening quarter.
The Northumberland girls were no slouches themselves and only solid defence by the Valkyries kept them at bay. In particular a crunching try-saving tackle by fullback Mel Halstead prevented a certain try for the visitors on the half-hour.
Morpeth got their reward when they scored wide on the right just before half-time to reduce the arrears at 15-5.
The Valkryies extended their lead with less than a minute of the second half played with a terrific solo effort from Halstead which she converted herself for 22-12. The seesaw nature of the game continued with a converted Morpeth try to make it 22-12 before another Halstead touchdown stretched the lead to 27-12.
The game finished with a rush of tries; a Morpeth touchdown made it 27-17 before tries from Jess Glanvill (2) one converted by Halstead and Jess Bray saw the Valkryies to a well-deserved 44-22 victory.
This was technically the Valkryies best performance to date, their handling and ball retention was a vast improvement on last week’s outing at Acklam. Everyone played their part with Glanvill, Halstead, Bray and skipper Cathy-Ann Myers having a big influence on the game.
