SKIPPER TOM RATCLIFFE SCORES AGAINST POCKLINGTON LAST WEEK

Scarborough kick off their league campaign for 2015-16 tomorrow with the visit of Selby to Silver Royd; this will be the first game of a tough season in Yorkshire Division One which will see the Seasiders in action against at least two teams with National League experience. Bradford & Bingley and Old Crossleyans were both relegated from North One at the end of last season and will prove difficult opponents along with promoted Bradford Salem and West Park Leeds.  Malton who lost narrowly to Morpeth in a promotion play-off back in May should also be in the mix.

Selby were Scarborough’s opponents in the final league game of last season back in April and got off to a flying start leading 14-0 with only ten minutes on the clock; however skipper Tom Ratcliffe’s men fought back scoring seven tries to clinch a 45-24 bonus-point victory for the home side.  Josh Cruise and Dan Porter who have been stars of the Selby set-up for several seasons, scored those early tries but have since moved on to  Otley and Doncaster Phoenix respectively which is a big blow to Selby’s ambitions this season. Last week they could only manage a 19-19 home draw with Yorkshire Three side Goole in a pre-season friendly.

For Scarborough much work has been done in the gym this summer and the forwards are looking in good shape; props Wesley Langkilde and Paul Taylor have shed a couple of stones apiece and are looking sharp whilst behind them Mikey Readman, Phil Watson and a string of other second row contenders will beef up the engine room.  Aussie Eamon Chapman who was outstanding last season will lead the breakaway forwards. Canadian prop Andy Zafatti is reportedly joining the club next week followed by a Kiwi No8 who is apparently waiting for a visa.

The backs looked particularly tasty in last week’s 31-26 defeat of North One outfit Pocklington, with the midfield pairing of Tom Harrison and Tomasz Chadwick combining well. Kiwi Ant Coffey looked lively on his debut and scored the opening try of the game whilst scrum-halves Jordy Wareham and Martin Robson looked fit and alert. Skipper Tom Ratcliffe had a good outing and got amongst the tries. There are also several players moving up from the juniors with their coaches having high hopes for young Ben Martin and Drew Govier.

At the time of going to press Coach Lee Douglas had named an 18 man squad for tomorrow’s game which includes four of the five try scorers from last week; Ant Coffey, Tom Ratcliffe, Tomasz Chadwick, and Eamon Chapman. Also in the squad are James Leach, Harry Domett and Drew Govier; Jordy Wakeham is unavailable. Games between the clubs have been traditionally high-scoring affairs and in their last three meetings Scarborough have beaten Selby 36-33, 32-30 (both at Selby) and 45-24; it could well be a very entertaining afternoon.
