Having played and beaten Yorkshire One sides Malton and West Park Leeds in previous pre-season games, North One East side Pocklington came into the game as firm favourites. However Scarborough played an entertaining brand of running, handling rugby from the start and for most of the game looked the sharper of the two teams, running in five tries.

The Seasiders took a 7-0 lead in the 6th minute when a move started in their own half by prop Wesley Langkilde was moved through four pairs of hands for Kiwi debutante fullback Ant Coffey to power over wide on the left. Fly-half Tom Harrison added the extras for a 7-0 lead. The Scarborough advantage was however short lived and a slick move near the home line saw Pocklington level the scores with a converted try.

Scarborough bossed the forward exchanges in tight and loose and their entertaining brand of rugby brought tries for skipper Tom Ratcliffe, centre Tomasz Chadwick  and Paul White in the 15th, 25th and 39th minute respectively. Harrison converted two and Scarborough deservedly led 26-7 at the break.

Skipper Tom Ratcliffe’s men struggled when they made a string of substitutions in the third quarter and ‘Pock’ ran in converted tries in the 47th and 59th minute. A hard fought fourth quarter thrilled a sparse Silver Royd turnout and the visitors levelled the scores at 26-26 in the 79th minute.

That looked to have settled the ‘friendly’ in a satisfactory way.  However, when Pocklington infringed in midfield and Harrison’s kick took play deep into the visitors’ territory; following an attacking lineout, back row Eamon Chapman brushed aside the attentions of a packed visiting defence to clinch the game with a powerfully taken try for a well deserved Scarborough win.
