With Yorkshire Two outfit Moortown failing to raise a team for their  Yorkshire Shield first round tie against Scarborough, Pocklington who were let down by Beverley in the Cup, have stepped into the breach to play a pre-season ‘friendly’ with Lee Douglas’ charges at Silver Royd on Saturday; kick-off 3pm.

‘Pock’ were promoted from Yorkshire One two seasons ago and have held their own with ease in North One (east); this will be their third pre-season game having had games with Malton and West Park Leeds so far this month. Scarborough on the other hand have yet to have a full game so far having been let down by Acklam last week.

Negotiations in the recruitment field have been tortuous this summer with many overseas players wanting payment for their services which is against Scarborough RUFC policy; however recruitment officer Nick Ingham has recruited two overseas players, Ant Coffey a utility back and Andy Zafatti a prop who join us from New Zealand and Canada respectively.

A large number of players from last season have been working on their fitness and physique throughout the summer with particularly Tomasz Chadwick, skipper Tom Ratcliffe, Paul Taylor, Phil Watson and Mikey Readman in good shape. Eamon Chapman flew back from Australia this week and there will be a clutch of good young players moving up to the senior ranks this season. Hayden Ogilvie will play in the front row I’m told and a big, nasty No8 (not sure about the adjectives) is in the pipeline.

With Bradford & Bingley, West Park Leeds and Bradford Salem further strengthening Yorkshire One this season, Lee Douglas will have a chance to assess his squad in match conditions ahead of what looks like a tough campaign ahead, starting with the visit to Silver Royd of Selby on the 5th of September.

Finally, having been under construction for most of the summer, Scarborough Rugby Club’s website should be on-line this time next week.  It has been sorely missed but I’m told the new site will be a revelation. I can’t wait!!
