Rugby returns to SILVER ROYD in September

I think I was glad to take a break from rugby at the end of April following a long season dogged by diminishing mobility. The disappointment in the Intermediate Cup semi-final followed by a woeful defeat at relegated Pontefract in the final league game of the season made the end of my 36th year reporting on the club rather dispiriting.  However following a couple of months R&R, a few invigorating breaks away and some exciting cricket between England and New Zealand I’m really looking forward to the season ahead.

Official pre-season training starts this evening at 7pm although many of the players have been working on their conditioning throughout the early summer. I have yet to talk to Nick Ingham with regards to his recruitment efforts this summer but will report back on that in my next blog. What I know so far is that Eamon Chapman will be with us for 2015-16 and inspirational prop Paul Taylor is now in a job which will allow him to play every Saturday, selection and injury permitting.

Scarborough’s season begins next month on the 22nd of August with a friendly against a club yet to be announced; the home game with Yorkshire Two outfit Moortown in the first round of the Yorkshire Challenge Shield will be played a week later on the 29th.  Following the club’s 11th annual Reunion on the evening of the 5th, the league programme starts with a home game against Selby on the 6th of September followed a week later with a rare early-season trip to Heath. Newly-promoted West Park Leeds, with ex-Scarborough back row Chris Lee in their line-up, visit Silver Royd on the 19th and September’s fixtures are completed with a trip to Dukes Park to take on Bridlington on the 26th. Off the field, the club’s annual sportsman’s dinner featuring former Ireland and Lion’s legend Fergus Slattery is on the 24th. The rest of the season’s fixtures plus results and league tables when the action commences can be found at http://www.englandrugby.com/fixtures-and-results/competitions/northern-division/2015-2016/group/19766

I have always written mainly about Rugby Union in this blog but as regular readers will know, I have a general interest in sport, particularly cricket. So I arbitrary reserve the right to include ANYTHING that interests me OR gets my goat in this blog henceforth!!
