Following last week’s cup success, Scarborough returns to Yorkshire One action on Saturday at league-leaders Doncaster Phoenix; ‘Donny’ are running away with the league title having won all fourteen of their games this season. Mind you, they never had things easy when they visited Silver Royd earlier in the season; Phoenix made a good start and led 5-0 at half-time and added to their tally with a couple of second half penalties. A great second half fight-back saw Tom Ratcliffe reduce the arrears with a try converted by Tomasz Chadwick before a late Jordi Wakeham try also converted by Chadwick gave Scarborough a 14-11 lead late in the game. However the visitors snatched a 16-14 victory in injury time with a touchdown from a catch and drive. Last Season the Seasiders did the double with a 26-23 victory at Silver Royd and a 22-19 win in south Yorkshire. Doncaster was on the road in their last league outing narrowly beating strugglers Pontefract 16-14.
Unfortunately Coach Lee Douglas is unable to name the same side as ran in nine tries in last Saturday’s 55-0 rout; lock Nick Ingham was sent off in that game and is replaced by Charlie Hoggard. Man-of-the-match against Consett, Hayden Ogilvie is unavailable and Matty Oxtoby plays at Blind-side whilst Tomasz Chadwick steps in at fullback for the irrepressible Corey Dennis who tweaked a hamstring last week. Wesley Langkilde and Jordi Wakeham are joined on the bench by Ian Williams who returns from injury. With the Vikings also in action at Doncaster a coach will leave Silver Royd on Saturday morning at 10.15am. The Danesmen entertain Withernsea in the only game at Silver Royd; all kick-offs are at 2.15pm.
Elsewhere in Yorkshire One Scarborough’s neighbouring clubs Bridlington, Malton and York entertain Selby, Old Brods and Wath respectively. Further west, Heath entertains Yarnbury whilst on Humberside Hullensians play Pontefract in a relegation clash; bottom club North Ribblesdale travel to Middlesbrough.
Scarborough’s ladies team, The Valkyries are also in action on Saturday with skipper Cathy-Ann Myers’ girls on the road at Harrogate. Having won a 10-a-side tournament at Darlington, the Valkyries were beaten at home by an experienced Barnsley side in their first ever 15-a-side outing at the end of November; however they bounced back to beat Workington 56-0 at Silver Royd a week later. Despite the wintery weather the Valkryies have been training hard and are very much looking forward to this weekend’s game.
