MATTY ELSE SCORES AT BRODS LAST SEASON

MATTY ELSE SCORES AT OLD BRODS LAST SEASON

Having recorded only their second home league win of the season last Saturday and a bonus point win at that, Scarborough look to make it two in a row with a third league success on the road this season at Old Brodleians.  The Hipperholme-based side are propping up Yorkshire One at the moment with only two wins from ten games; both were at home;  against York (22-8) in the second week of the season and North Ribblesdale (20-12) two weeks ago. Last Saturday Brods went down 21-14 at Pontefract; their seventh defeat in their last eight games.  Old Brodleians are a long-established club with strength in depth and it’s a real surprise that they are struggling this season. Typical of Yorkshire One most of their games have been close affairs and Coach Lee Douglas’ charges can expect a hard-fought game on the famous Hipperholme slope.

For Saturday’s game the Seasiders have selected Tomasz Chadwick (on the bench) and Graeme Jeffrey on the wing but both will have a fitness test before the game; however Ian Williams returns to the front row having missed last week’s North Ribblesdale game with an injury sustained at Middlesbrough. Tom Harrison and Paul White retain their places at fly-half and inside centre respectively and last week’s man-of-the-match Cory Dennis continues at fullback.  Last Season’s clash between Brods and Scarborough at Hipperholme turned out to be a remarkable game with the cliché ‘a game of two halves’ never more appropriate. Playing down the famous slope with a gale and driving rain behind them the home side raced to a 22-0 halftime lead. Harnessing the topography and elements after the break Scarborough had reduced the arrears to four points at 18-22 going into what was the last play of the match; Kiwi centre Benji Cottle crossed in the corner to grab a last gasp 23-22 victory for the visitors in injury time. However a sizeable section of the home support went wild after Cottle reportedly dropped the ball in the act of Scoring. The referee on the day Mr John Wolstenholm would have none of it and although the conversion was missed the try stood. Old Brodleians got their revenge in the return fixture at Silver Royd running out 22-20 winners of another exciting game.

Elsewhere in Yorkshire One this week, Bridlington who slid to a home defeat by Heath RFC (14-0) last week travel to league Leaders Doncaster Phoenix, Heath entertain Pontefract, York travel to Hullensians and second placed Malton are at home to Yarnbury. Middlesbrough who went down 3-6 in a dreary affair at Selby last week entertain Wath and North Ribblesdale smarting from last week’s 27-12 reverse at Scarborough, host Selby. Nearer to home the Scarborough third string, the Danesmen entertain Grimbsy at Silver Royd whilst the Vikings travel with the first fifteen to take on Old Brods 2nds.

Rob Sutton played his last game for Scarborough last week as he flies to Melbourne shortly to work on a contract which initially will last six months. The big back-row man could however settle in Australia if things go well and I’m sure everyone at the club will wish him well.

Finally, looking forward to next week, there’s a treat in store at Silver Royd where Scarborough’s women’s team The Valkryies take on Barnsley Ladies Rugby as a curtain-raiser before the Scarborough-Pontefract Yorkshire One game at Silver Royd; kick-off 1200 noon.
