Scarborough are on a horrendous run at the moment having won only one game since the second week of the season. To be fair almost all of the games that were lost were nip and tuck affairs and only last week were they truly beaten by a better side; Malton were the best side I’ve seen in Yorkshire One this season and I look to see great things from them in the coming months.

As for the men from Silver Royd, they have in general played some good rugby this season and their small but cohesive forward pack has done well in the set pieces especially the scrums. However as a team they have been ‘bullied’ in certain games by aggressive teams and it’s something they need to work on. I certainly don’t forget that at this level it’s an amateur game played for enjoyment by the players but physicality is a part of the game and has to be embraced. Coach Lee Douglas has talked to me every week about players’ commitment to training; this is something else that has got to be embraced or he’s really wasting his time. I think it’s time for Scarborough’s squad to stand up and be counted and get their season back on track.

This Saturday they travel to Teeside to take on Middlesbrough at Acklam Park. Middlesbrough were relegated from North One East at the end of last season and this is their first ever season in Yorkshire One since the inception of leagues in 1987. They opened their campaign with a 25-21 win at Bridlington then lost at home to Doncaster Phoenix and Hullensions. In all they have won five of their eight league games and sit fourth in the table. Last week they came away from Pontefract with a creditable 33-30 win in which they scored five tries, so the visit of Struggling Scarborough should hold no fears for them on their own patch.

JOE MARSHALL RETURNS FROM YORKSHIRE DUTY

For tomorrow’s game Scarborough recall Jesse Macdonald to the front row and Matthew Else starts at No8 with Taylor Smith and Eamon Chapman at 6 and 7 respectively. In the backs, Joe Marshall returns from Yorkshire Duty to replace Graeme Jeffrey who tore a bicep last week. Paul Taylor, Hayden Ogilvie and Phil Stewart are on the bench.  There are no other senior games scheduled for tomorrow. Scarborough’s game at Middlesbrough kicks off at 2.15pm.

If proof were needed, the value of having local derbies was shown last week when over 500 people turned up at Silver Royd for the visit of Malton in Yorkshire One. With plenty of supporters travelling from Malton there was a great atmosphere at the match and the Silver Royd coffers were boosted accordingly. Roll on Brid!!

VICTORIOUS VALKYRIES AT DARLINGTON

Finally, Niki Duncan has informed me that the Scarborough ladies XV THE VALKRIES will play a curtain raiser before the next Scarborough 1st XV home game against North Ribblesdale. Following their success in their first tournament at Darlington, I’m really looking forward to seeing the girls in action. Further details when I have them.

Scarborough RUFC’s Multi-Skills camps for Children at Silver Royd this week have been a great success with every day well supported. Great Work from YDO Tomasz Chadwick, Alex Conlin, Tom Ratcliffe and Jordan Wakeham made it great fun for the kids. Well done gentlemen.
