Yorkshire One rugby returns to Silver Royd tomorrow as Scarborough play Wath in their first home league fixture of season 2014-15. For the players the season started a couple of weeks ago and considering problems with injury and unavailability, skipper Tom Ratcliffe’s men have made a really good fist of their first two games. A 22-13 win at Barnsley in the Yorkshire Shield second round in which they came from behind at half time and last week’s 32-30 thriller at Selby delighted the small band of club members who travelled. These performances were particularly creditable due to the fact that so many players left the club in the summer and in the case of Zbynec Schutz and Blake Nightingale only days before the first game. With the departure of Schutz to Ireland, Phil Stewart stepped in at Nine for the game at Barnsley but was unfortunately injured; however youngster Jordi Wakeham stepped into the scrum-half slot and has forged a cracking half-back partnership with Tom Chadwick the club’s new YDO. At Selby Ryan Pickering was unavailable due to work commitments and hooker Mark Hopper took his place at prop to play his first game in the position. The front row of Hopper, Ian Williams and Paul Taylor had a tremendous game and Mark was nominated Man of the Match. Unfortunately Mark is unavailable for the game tomorrow and Ryan returns; however the versatility of the club’s emerging players is great to see. I have been informed that the first of the antipodean reinforcements, a prop forward, arrives at Manchester airport tomorrow morning improving our strength in-depth in the forward pack.

Wath upon Dearne RUFC won their opening league game of the season last week narrowly defeating visitors Pontefract 29-25 in south Yorkshire. Last Season, having lost 8-16 at home, Scarborough had the upper hand in the return fixture at Wath running out 27-10 winners of a game they dominated. You will see from below that tomorrow’s line-up is very different from the final home game at the end of last season against York; with the departure of so many players only four remain from the fifteen which started that day. The Scarborough line-up at Silver Royd tomorrow is: DENNIS DOMETT RATCLIFFE(C) JEFFREY MARSHALL CHADWICK WAKEHAM PICKERING WILLIAMS TAYLOR INGHAM READMAN OXTOBY STEWART ELSE.
