CRAIG FARRELL RETURNS TO ACTION IN FINAL

Image

Scarborough travel to Clifton Park tomorrow as underdogs in the Yorkshire Shield final where they take on Yorkshire One champions Ilkley; the west Yorkshiremen have had a great season and just pipped south Yorkshire side Dinnington by a single point to clinch the league. However the Seasiders drew 17-17 with Ilkley at their Stacks Field HQ back in October and went down 6-13 in a close-fought game at Silver Royd having led 6-0 at half time. Ilkley ended the season unbeaten in 19 games and are bang on form, whilst Scarborough stuttered after Christmas before picking up in the spring, losing only one of their final six games. Skipper Phil Watson misses tomorrow’s game through injury but Craig Farrell is fit and joins Benji Cottle in the centres; Benji will play his last game for the club before moving to Scotland. Also departing after this game is fullback Tom Harrison who departs for Australia next week and possibly prop Nino Cutino who is contemplating a move to Hull. But I’m sure that’ll be the last thing on the minds of these players as they run out at York tomorrow. It’ll also be a memorable day for veteran prop Tom Fish who is on the bench joining Paul Taylor, Ryan Pickering, Nick Ingham, Chris Purdy, Tom Ratcliffe and Joe Marshall. I expect a close game akin to the previous meetings between the teams this season with quarter neither being asked or given and think of this; the last time Scarborough reached the shield final they were runaway Yorkshire Two champions, had gone twenty odd games without defeat and had a few weeks before beaten their opponents in the final Sheffield Tigers; Tigers won the final 18-6. Could the roles be reversed in the case of Scarborough and Ilkley this time?

DARREN FEARN JOINS SALE SHARKS

The other big local rugby union news this week was the signing of ex-Scarborough player Darren Fearn by Aviva Premiership club Sale Sharks. Darren was previously with Newcastle Falcons and Bedford Blues and is looking forward to moving back north. I ‘wet his head’ when he was born and have followed his progress since, look forward to see this likeable young man progress at his new club. All the best Daz!
