SCARBOROUGH AT PONTEFRACT IN THE SHIELD 22 DECEMBER 2012

This season’s inclement weather has caused the Yorkshire Rugby Football Union to cancel all remaining games this season in their county knockout competitions, The Yorkshire Challenge Cup, Shield and Silver Trophy. This means that Scarborough who had reached the quarterfinal of the Shield and a home game with Dinnington followed by a home draw in the semi-final will miss out on a great chance of reaching the final for the first time since the turn of the century. The size of the leagues now means it takes only a few postponements to cause a real backlog of fixtures. Last weekend’s big freeze left only two games untouched in Yorkshire One; Ilkley made the long journey east to Bridlington and were rewarded with a 17-13 win whilst York beat Old Brodlieans 35-14 at Clifton Park. Scarborough now travel to Pontefract on Saturday to play the league game postponed due to heavy snow last Saturday. Skipper Phil Watson misses the trip but Corey Dennis returns on the wing and Tommy Goodmen, Tom Fish and Nick Burgess are also in the squad. The Vikings who have won their last eight games in a row have picked a squad which includes Andrew Baird, Matt Lucas, Jack Rollinson and Rory Day but are awaiting confirmation of a prospective fixture at Silver Royd. On Sunday the Danesmen taken on Nottinghamshire touring side Ollerton at Silver Royd, kicking off at 1.30pm.
