AN ENTHRALLED TURNOUT FOR THE BIG GAME AT THE J.M. GUTHRIE

I’ve just returned home from Scarborough Rugby club where I watched England thrash the All Blacks. With the Danesmen-Malton game called off, I could get in out of the cold and watch the international. What a revelation Stuart Lancaster’s team were: they never gave the New Zealanders a sniff in a tight first half, turning round 12-0 ahead thanks to the boot of Owen Farrell. A Farrell penalty just after the break stretched the lead to 15-0 and the men in white were cruising. They  appeared rattled however when skipper Richie McCaw’s  men ran in a couple of tries aided by some poor England tackling and with the conversions coming from fly-half Dan Carter, the visitor’s trailed by only a point at 15-14. There was great trepidation in the club room but to everyone’s delight, England bounced back blitzing the visitors with three consecutive tries.  A late try for the All Black’s gave the score-line some respectability before a magnificent rearguard action prevented them from reducing the deficit further. Twickenham went wild celebrating a magnificent 38-21 victory but Messrs  Edwards and Canham were nowhere to be found! With 20 consecutive wins behind them, they are still a great All Black’s side but not invincible. On the other side of the coin, one swallow does not a summer make; however it was one of the great England victories.
