Alex Sharp has been appointed captain of Scarborough’s Vikings XV. Last year’s skipper Rob Hazledine is still recovering from a long term injury and Sharp a married 34 year old father of two boys (5 and 7 years old) has taken up the reins. Scarborough born, Alex played some rugby at school but only seriously got involved when he attended Manchester Met University between 1998 and 2001 playing for the university and Manchester RFC 2nds/3rds.  After graduation Alex stayed in the Manchester area and played some rugby at Didsbury and Astley rugby clubs before work commitments saw him stop playing in 2002. He returned to Scarborough in 2010 to work at Scarborough Hospital and took his eldest son along to Silver Royd for mini-rugby. Alex was very impressed by the setup and things progressed quickly; he started training and playing with the Danesmen and this season has moved up to the Vikings. Both sons now play mini-rugby and he coaches the under-8 team. He told me, “I love playing again and am very proud to have been asked to captain the Vikings this season; the team spirit, cohesion and most importantly continuity has been great with the senior teams training together and the credit has to go to Jason Lowde for that.”
