London 2012 Olympics: honour of lighting Olympic flame handed to Britain's 'next generation'

LONDON 2012  – SPECTACULAR OPENING CEREMONY

I can assure you that you won’t see another post on my blog like this but I had to get my thoughts down.  Friday evening’s spectacular opening ceremony of London 2012 resonated with me so much as I celebrated the start of the games of the 30thOlympiad and another cancer-free four years. I was diagnosed with Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma during the 1996 games in Atlanta and was given the all clear at the end of March 1997 so the quadrennial Olympic sporting celebration always reminds me of how lucky I’ve been and I celebrate my good fortune and remember the people whose skill and dedication enabled me to have been in long term remission for sixteen years. Although several health professionals were involved, it was mainly the ministrations of my chemotherapy nurses Sisters Adele Wood (now Jordan) and Carol Popplestone which I remember most. It was in the days before the MacMillan Unit and I was treated in a room equipped with two battered old armchairs on the top floor of the north wing of Scarborough hospital with those two resourceful ladies managing to beg, steal or borrow the wherewithal to run their oncology operation. I was a lucky man and returned to work in May 1997 and never looked back except with admiration for the people who got me through what was one of the worst periods of my life. Strangely even that period turned out to be life affirming and since then thanks to television, I’ve managed to catch four great Olympic Games; Sydney, Athens, Beijing and now London and look forward with hope to Rio 2016; fingers and everything else crossed!
