A BUSY WEEKEND

Following a fallow week which was quiet on the rugby front, this weekend has seen me rushing around to cover my favourite sport. Friday evening saw the visit to Silver Royd of a group of Italian youngsters from Verona rugby club followed by the Yorkshire Sevens today and a trip to catch the Scarborough Pirates in action before a quick drive back to Silver Royd for the presentation to the winners and runners up of the sevens. On Friday 14-16 year old’s from Scarborough had a joint training session with their visitors  watched by an open-topped bus-load of foreign students from the language schools in Scarborough. The evening was a great success with the youngsters mingling freely after a really good workout. The Yorkshire sevens final held at Silver Royd on Saturday 14th July was a bit of a disappointment in that several clubs who had won their region’s competition, dropped out of the final. Thankfully Catterick, Whitby, Scarborough and Guisborough stepped in at the last minute. Predictably, Grasscutters (Beverley) and The Mighty Peth (Morpeth) ruled the roost with Peth winning the round-robin competition. Scarborough acquitted themselves well running Beverley very close before going down 15-17 and a great game saw them just beaten by a Fijian dominated Catterick side 21-17. The Seasiders had the upper hand in their local derby with Whitby, winning 24-5 but disappointingly went down 24-14 to Bridlington. The event was once again staged efficiently by Scarborough RUFC but with Sevens becoming an Olympic sport in 2016 the Yorkshire Rugby Union are going to have to take the short game seriously and organize and advertise their competition more professionally in the future.  As for Scarborough Pirates they keep marching on and a 44-34 win over Holderness Vikings which included a hat-trick of tries from Tom Ratcliffe was a great result. I’ll put my feet up for a few days this week, then I’ll put my writing cap back on for the upcoming Olympics. It’s a hard life being semi-retired!!
